Weather and tea – level 3

30-08-2022 07:00

In India’s eastern Siliguri city, unpredictable weather conditions affected tea production.

In June, the region faced heavy rains; however, dry weather followed in July, which damaged plants and made hard conditions for workers. They couldn’t pluck leaves during heavy rains, and when the temperature reached 39 degrees Celsius, they still couldn’t work. In addition, insects infected the plantations.

Tea plantations in Siliguri always depended on the weather; however, the weather patterns changed and upset the industry’s economics. This year, farmers suffered 25-30% of crop loss.

Difficult words: pluck (to remove), plantation (a large farm to grow crops for coffee, sugar, or tobacco), economics (production, distribution and consumption of goods).
