Why does tech cost more? – level 3
20-10-2026 07:00
The traditional tech market bargain where every new gadget offered better performance and storage for a similar price is under pressure due to the global AI boom.
As tech companies rush to build massive data centers, they require huge quantities of specialized memory chips. Because chipmakers make much higher profits supplying data centers, consumer electronics manufacturers are facing a severe memory shortage and skyrocketing component costs. To cope, brands are raising prices, cutting down on device memory, or lowering specifications, which means consumers now pay more for devices with fewer features and slower speeds.
Building new semiconductor factories takes years and billions of dollars, and chipmakers are cautious about overinvesting due to historic market crashes. As a result, experts predict high prices and minor upgrades will continue for the next few years. Consumers are adapting by keeping their phones and laptops for much longer or turning to the fast-growing market for cheaper, refurbished devices.
Difficult words: boom (a sudden period of rapid economic growth, activity, or popularity), skyrocketing (increasing very quickly and by a large amount in a short time), refurbished (cleaned, repaired, and tested to work like new before being sold again).
