Why people have different skin colors – level 2
29-07-2026 07:00
Humans have different skin colors because people from the past lived under different levels of sunlight. Near the equator, where light from the sun is very strong, dark skin protected people’s bodies.
When humans moved to places with less sun, dark skin made it hard to make enough vitamin D. We need vitamin D to build strong bones and stay healthy. Over time, skin color changed and became lighter so people could make vitamin D even with less sunlight. Some people can also tan, which means their skin gets darker in summer and lighter in winter.
Today, people travel and live all around the world. Because of this, some people need to protect their skin from the sun, while others need to take extra vitamin D pills to stay healthy.
Difficult words: equator (a line around the middle of the Earth), tan (to become brown or a darker color after spending time in the sun).
You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.
