Why there are two tides a day – level 1

16-04-2025 07:00

The Moon and the Sun make the ocean go up and down. This is called tides. The Moon pulls on Earth’s water and makes it rise in two places. As the Earth turns, these places move. We get two high tides and two low tides every day.

The Sun also helps make tides. When the Moon and Sun are in a line, the water goes up more. When they are not in a line, the water does not move as much. Some places have big tides, and some places have small ones.

On other planets and moons, tides can be very strong. One moon even has hot volcanoes because of tides.

Difficult words: rise (to go up), moon (a rock which goes around a planet).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What causes the occurrence of two high tides and two low tides each day, and how does the position of the Moon and Sun affect the height of the water?
