World Petanque Championship – level 2

22-09-2023 15:00

In Benin, Terrazini Marcel Bio competed in the World Petanque Championships, which took place in a new petanque arena.

Bio narrowly missed winning gold in the 2016 championship, and he wanted to bring the trophy home for his country at least this year. But he and his partner ended up winning the silver medal. They lost to France in the Men’s Doubles category.

Petanque originates from French beach clubs in the early 20th century, and it involves throwing steel balls close to a smaller wooden ball called a cochonnet. Players must stand inside a circle with both feet on the ground.

The tournament was a big achievement for Benin, and it drew international attention and media coverage.

Difficult words: trophy (a cup or other object which a winner gets), achievement (success), coverage (when media talk or write about something a lot).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What are the rules of Petanque and what skill set do players need to be successful in this game?
