World’s largest iceberg collision – level 3
28-01-2025 07:00
The world’s largest iceberg, A23A, is moving towards South Georgia, a remote British island known for its rich wildlife, including penguins and seals.
This enormous iceberg broke away from Antarctica in December and is heading for ‘Iceberg Alley,’ where icebergs usually disintegrate. Scientists, sailors, and fishermen are monitoring its path through satellite images as they prepare for possible impacts. If A23A grounds itself near South Georgia, it could block the feeding grounds of many penguins and seals, endangering their survival. Similar events in the past have caused massive wildlife losses. However, the approaching iceberg represents both danger and a chance for valuable research.
British researchers have studied the iceberg to learn about its effects on the ocean’s carbon cycle. Although A23A separated from Antarctica in 1986, it likely was not caused by climate change. However, scientists warn that climate change might increase the number of such giant icebergs in the future.
Difficult words: disintegrate (to break into smaller pieces), ground (to come into contact with the ocean floor and stop moving), massive (exceptionally large).

What potential impacts could the iceberg A23A have on the wildlife of South Georgia if it grounds itself near the island, and how are these impacts being monitored?
