Young Germans do not want to be soldiers – level 1

18-08-2026 07:00

Germany wants a bigger army today. The government needs many new soldiers to protect the country. They spend a lot of money on ads. They send letters to young people.

The letters ask teenagers if they want to join the army. But very few young people want to be soldiers. Many students say no to the army. Almost 6,000 young people officially say that they will not fight. Students also go to protests in the streets.

Most people agree that the country needs a strong army, but young people do not want to join. Germany still needs many more soldiers for the future.

Difficult words: army (a large group of people who fight on land), ad (a picture, text, or video which tries to make people buy or do something), agree (to say yes to a plan or idea).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

How many young people officially say that they will not fight?
