Young Tennis Star – level 2

09-07-2019 07:00

Last Monday, Fifteen-year-old Cori ‘CoCo’ Gauff played against Venus Williams at Wimbledon. The young talent beat the champion 6-4, 6-4. The tennis world was stunned.

The match was also Gauff’s first time at Wimbledon, and she became the youngest person to win a match there since 1991. Before this year’s success, Gauff won the French Open Junior title at 14 and the U.S. Open Junior Final at 13.

Gauff later told the BBC that it was her dream to play against Venus Williams. She grew up idolising her and her sister Serena. After the match, she thanked Venus and said she would not be there if not for her. Williams congratulated her on the win and told her to ‘keep going’.

Difficult words: stun (shock, amaze), idolise (look up to a person that you want to become).
