Japan’s elections – level 2

22-07-2025 07:00

In Japan, Prime Minister Ishiba’s political group lost the upper house election. They didn’t get enough seats to keep control. Ishiba said he won’t quit because he wants to finish trade talks with the US before the August 1 deadline.

These talks are important to stop new taxes on Japanese goods.

Opposition parties won more seats. Many people voted for them because they asked for lower taxes and more help for families. A new party called Sanseito also did well. This group talked a lot about stopping immigration and said they want to protect Japanese people.

Now the government must work with other parties to make new laws. This may lead to more spending, and some investors are worried about Japan’s plans.

Difficult words: quit (to stop), trade talks (when countries talk together about business and money), investor (a person who puts money into something to make a profit).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What did Prime Minister Ishiba hope to prevent by completing the trade talks with the US before the August 1 deadline?
