Japan’s elections – level 3

22-07-2025 07:00

Japan’s ruling coalition, led by Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, lost its majority in the upper house of parliament during Sunday’s election.

The result increases pressure on Ishiba, who already lost control of the lower house last year. However, he announced he won’t step down because of the urgent trade negotiations with the United States, which must be finalized by August 1 to avoid high tariffs on Japanese exports.

Opposition parties gained seats, especially those promising tax cuts and more public spending. Voters were unhappy with the rising cost of living, particularly with food prices, such as rice. A new far-right party called Sanseito also gained attention and seats by promoting anti-immigration messages. The party started on YouTube but became more popular through its ‘Japanese First’ campaign.

Experts say the ruling party will need to make compromises with the opposition, which could lead to more government spending. Foreign investors are now more uncertain about Japan’s economic direction and stability.

Difficult words: coalition (a group of parties or people working together), promote (to support or actively encourage), compromise (an agreement where both sides give up something).
