Mexico’s first indigenous top judge – level 2
08-09-2025 15:00
Hugo Aguilar becomes Mexico’s first indigenous chief justice in more than 150 years. He comes from the Mixtec community and knows agrarian law and indigenous rights.
Many people hope his job will help indigenous Mexicans, who often do not have important positions. This change is historic and exciting for his community. Some people criticize how he got the job. The political party Morena helped support him and other judges who agree with the party. Aguilar also had a past role in a project with a tourist train that some indigenous people didn’t like. Critics say he helped the project instead of the communities.
In the next two years, he will need to show whether he will support indigenous people or mainly the government. His decisions may affect justice in Mexico.
Difficult words: chief justice (the main judge), agrarian (related to farming), historic (very important).
You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.
What role did the political party Morena play in Hugo Aguilar’s appointment as chief justice?
