Mexico’s first indigenous top judge – level 1

08-09-2025 15:00

Hugo Aguilar becomes Mexico’s first indigenous chief justice in more than 150 years. He comes from the Mixtec community and knows agrarian law and indigenous rights.

Many people hope that his job will help indigenous Mexicans, who often do not have important positions. This change is very important and exciting for his community. Some people criticize how he gets the job. The political party Morena helps support him and other judges who agree with the party. Aguilar also has a past role in a project with a tourist train that some indigenous people do not like. Critics say he helps the project instead of the communities. In the next two years, he will need to show if he will support indigenous people or the government. What he does may have a big impact on people in Mexico.

Difficult words: chief justice (the top judge), agrarian (about farming), support (to help).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

How does Hugo Aguilar’s past involvement in the tourist train project contribute to criticism of his appointment?
