Africa’s biggest dam – level 1

15-09-2025 07:00

Ethiopia has a new dam on the Blue Nile. It is the biggest dam in Africa. It takes 14 years to build it.

The dam can make electricity for millions of people. Many homes in Ethiopia have no power, so people believe that the dam will change this. Some families give money to help build it. The government says that it is a project for the whole country.

But not everyone is happy. Egypt and Sudan worry that the dam will take away water from the Nile. They want to talk, but it is not easy to agree with each other. Ethiopia says that the dam is safe and will not hurt them. The dam will also give power to other countries. Many people see it as a great thing.

Difficult words: dam (a big wall on a river which helps make electricity), project (a planned work or activity which takes a long time to do), agree (to have the same ideas or opinions as somebody else).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

Which two countries worry that the dam will take water away from the Nile?
