Africa’s biggest dam – level 2
15-09-2025 07:00
Ethiopia opened the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, the biggest in Africa. It stands on the Blue Nile, and it took 14 years to build.
The dam can produce huge amounts of electricity, enough for millions of people in Ethiopia and nearby countries. Many families without power hope their lives will improve. People across Ethiopia gave money through donations and bonds, and many see the dam as a national project.
But Egypt and Sudan are worried. They say the dam could cut their water from the Nile, especially in dry times. Talks between the three countries didn’t bring an agreement, so the tension continues. Ethiopia says the dam will not harm others and believes it will help the country grow stronger.
Difficult words: donation (money which people give to help a person or organization), bond (an official paper which people buy to support a project), national (related to all the people of a country).
You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.
Why are Egypt and Sudan concerned about the dam’s impact on their water supply?
