Sharks: New suits keep people safer – level 2
17-10-2025 15:00
Scientists at Flinders University in Australia are testing new wetsuits that help protect people from shark bites. These wetsuits use very strong materials, which make the injuries smaller and help people lose less blood.
Shark attacks don’t happen often, but they can kill people. The suits cannot stop all injuries, but they can make shark bites less dangerous. The scientists try the suits with white and tiger sharks. They see that the new materials work better than normal wetsuits.
Old metal suits are too heavy and hard to move in, so the team wants to make new suits that are softer and easier for surfers to use, but still very strong.
Difficult words: wetsuit (a tight piece of clothing that people wear in water to keep warm and protect their body), bite (to use your teeth to cut or injure), injury (hurt to the body).
You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.
Which shark species did the scientists use when testing the new wetsuits?
