Ghana gets back old things from the UK and South Africa – level 2
14-11-2025 07:00
Ghana received more than 130 gold and bronze artifacts from Britain and South Africa. These items were once part of the Asante Kingdom’s treasures.
A long time ago, British soldiers stole some of these objects, while museums and collectors bought the others. The artifacts include royal objects, drums, and gold weights that show the culture and beliefs of the Asante people. During a ceremony in Kumasi, King Otumfuo Osei Tutu II thanked the South African company AngloGold Ashanti and British art expert Hermione Waterfield for giving the objects back.
The return is an important step for Ghana, which wants to bring home its lost history.
Difficult words: artifact (an old object, often found in museums), treasure (valuable things such as gold or jewels), collector (a person who gathers and keeps special objects).
You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.
During the ceremony in Kumasi, which organizations and individuals did King Otumfuo Osei Tutu II thank for returning the artifacts?
