Bulgaria has the euro – level 3
05-01-2026 07:00
Bulgaria becomes the 21st country to use the euro on New Year’s Day, which marks an important step in its connection with the EU.
Many businesses support the change because it makes trade easier, especially for companies that work with partners in other countries. They no longer need to exchange money, which saves time and cost and helps cross-border business grow.
However, many people feel worried about the new currency. Prices already rise due to inflation, and many citizens fear the euro will make daily life more expensive. Political problems add to this concern, since recent protests removed the government from power. Analysts say leaders don’t explain the change well enough, which leaves people unsure about what to expect.
Older people, people in remote areas, and people with less education may face the most trouble at first. Some political parties also don’t agree with the euro because they fear a loss of national identity. Even though experts expect only short price changes, almost half of Bulgarians still don’t want the euro.
Difficult words: currency (a type of money), inflation (a rise in prices), concern (a worry or something that makes you feel worried), remote (far away from cities or main places).
