A singer wins elections in Nepal – level 2

17-03-2026 07:00

A new party, which is only three years old, won the national election in Nepal. Its leader, Balendra Shah, used to be a rapper and the mayor of Kathmandu. He is now likely to become the next prime minister.

The election happened after large protests by young people last year. Many people were angry about corruption, job problems, and a plan to ban social media. The protests became very serious, and 77 people died. The government then fell, and a new election was called.

Many young voters supported the new party because they wanted change and new leaders. The party promises to fight corruption and create more jobs, but some critics say these plans may be hard to complete.

Difficult words: mayor (the elected leader of a city or town), likely (something that will probably happen), corruption (when people in power use their position to get money or benefits).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What were the main grievances that fueled the protests, leading to 77 deaths and the collapse of the government?
