Bulgaria stops helping Ukraine – level 2

15-06-2026 15:00

The Prime Minister of Bulgaria announced that his country will no longer send weapons to Ukraine. He said that Bulgaria gave enough help and that the war is hurting his country’s economy.

Radev wants countries to find a diplomatic and peaceful way of ending the war. While the government will stop sending weapons from its own military warehouses, private companies in Bulgaria will still make and sell weapons to Ukraine. Bulgaria is a member of NATO and the European Union, and it started to send military aid to Ukraine in 2022. Other politicians also supported the Prime Minister and said that sending more weapons only causes more people to die.

But not everyone in Bulgaria agrees with this new plan. Some political groups are unhappy with the decision. They say that other countries will not trust Bulgaria as a good member of NATO and the EU.

Difficult words: diplomatic (connected with managing relations between different countries), warehouse (a large building used for storing things), military aid (when one country helps another in the form of weapons, soldiers, or military equipment).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What do some political groups fear will happen to Bulgaria's reputation within NATO and the EU if it stops sending weapons?
