Prince Harry at court – level 3

13-07-2026 07:00

Prince Harry and six other high-profile people, including Sir Elton John and Elizabeth Hurley, have lost their High Court privacy case against Associated Newspapers Limited, the publisher of the Daily Mail.

The claimants sued the publisher for a serious breach of privacy. Allegedly, reporters used unlawful methods like phone tapping and deception to get information for articles for over twenty years. However, the judge dismissed the cases because the claimants failed to provide enough evidence to prove their claims. The judge also said that personal suspicion is not sufficient in court.

While the publisher celebrated the verdict, the case represents a massive financial loss for both sides. Meanwhile, Harry is in London for charity events amid fresh communication problems with the royal family. The palace rejected his request to stay at Buckingham Palace due to a missed deadline, and his family remained in the US because of ongoing disagreements over police protection.

Difficult words: high-profile (very famous and important), claimant (a person who starts a legal process in a court of law to get justice, money, or a right), phone-taping (secretly listening to or recording someone else’s private telephone calls).

What reasons did the judge give for dismissing the claimants' privacy cases?
