Ever since the Sinaloa Cartel split into rival groups in 2024, social media has turned into a dangerous battleground for Mexico’s drug wars.

The competing factions regularly target popular content creators, and use them to show off power, post propaganda, and recruit young people. Local influencers who adopt narco culture for clicks often get caught in the middle and put themselves directly in the sights of rival gangs. On top of that, federal agents are looking into dozens of creators accused of helping cartels clean dirty money through online shops, brand deals, and live donations.

This deadly connection has already cost the lives of at least 19 influencers across the country. Weak police work, a lack of real punishment, and slow moderation by tech platforms mean cartels can keep using young creators as easy tools for cash and influence online.

Difficult words: faction (a small, organized group within a larger organization or political party), propaganda (information, ideas, or rumors deliberately spread to influence public opinion or promote a political cause), lack (not enough of something).
