2022 space exploration – level 3

02-01-2023 07:00

2022 was a year of big milestones in space exploration.

After multiple delays, NASA successfully launched its colossal SLS moon rocket and launched future moon and Mars missions. NASA’s 9-billion-dollar James Webb Space Telescope captured powerful images that opened a new chapter of cosmic exploration.

China completed construction of its Celestial Palace space station, the second permanently inhabited space outpost after the International Space Station. In November, three Chinese astronauts arrived at the space station for the first in-orbit crew rotation in Chinese space history. Scientists unveiled an image of a supermassive black hole called Sagittarius A in the center of the Milky Way; it was only the second one ever to be imaged.

Lastly, NASA’s Dart spacecraft successfully slammed into a distant asteroid in the world’s first test of a planetary defense system to prevent a potential meteorite collision with Earth.

Difficult words: colossal (extremely large or great), outpost (an isolated or remote branch of something), potential (possible).
