A major flash flood struck the Grand Canyon in Arizona. It left at least two people dead, several missing, and dozens needed to be evacuated by helicopter.

The severe flooding occurred in Bright Angel Canyon, where Bright Angel Creek transformed into a dangerous torrent. According to experts, flash floods happen regularly during the southwest monsoon season, but fatalities are rare. The intensity of this particular flood was greatly increased by a recent wildfire, which destroyed vegetation and left bare soil unable to absorb rain. As a result, massive amounts of mud, rocks, and debris washed down into the canyon and destroyed the Trans Canyon Pipeline that supplies fresh water to the South Rim.

Experts emphasize that hikers in remote areas must check weather forecasts and head to high ground immediately when severe storms threaten the region.
