A bookstore gets a fine – level 1

20-07-2023 07:00

A big bookstore in Hungary gets a big fine. The fine is nearly 36,000 dollars.

The problem is about an LGBTQ novel. The government has a law from 2021. The law says that children must not see LGBTQ things. The book must have a plastic cover. Stores cannot put such books near schools or churches. The bookstore does not wrap the book. Therefore it gets a fine.

Many people do not like the law. The EU doesn’t like it either. Some people say that the law is confusing. Other stores get a fine too. The bookstore cannot change the decision.

Difficult words: fine (money which someone must pay for breaking a law), cover (a thing which covers something to keep it safe), confusing (unclear).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What are the potential issues with the law regarding the protection of children from LGBTQ material?
