In Austria, the construction of a new business park on the grounds of a former Nazi concentration camp has sparked widespread outrage.

The historic Hirtenberg site, a subcamp of Mauthausen, held around 400 female prisoners during World War II who were forced into slave labor.

Despite archaeological evidence confirming the location’s historical significance, Austria’s Federal Monuments Office decided the surviving physical remains were insufficient for official protection. Consequently, developers have begun building warehouse facilities and a supermarket on the property.

Activists, historians, and memorial organizations strongly oppose the project and say that sacred history is being sacrificed for economic interests. They emphasize that physical evidence of Nazi atrocities must be preserved rather than replaced by modern commercial structures. Although the local developer has offered to fund a memorial, critics say that building over a former concentration camp disrespects the victims and undermines historic memory in a nation that historically struggled to confront its Nazi past.
