A dam reveals an old town – level 3

07-05-2024 07:00

In the northern Philippines, a long-lasting drought has caused a dam to shrink, unveiling the ruins of a centuries-old town.

This newfound sight has become an attraction for locals. Also, it serves as an additional source of income in an area reliant on rice cultivation. The dried-up dam has exposed parts of an ancient church and the foundations of other old buildings in Nueva Ecija province. Residents like Aurea Delos Santos, a retired nurse, express excitement at the sight’s revelation. Some locals, like fisherman Nelson Dellera, have taken the opportunity to profit by taking tourists to the site.

The old town had been relocated in the 1970s during the dam’s construction. The dam now plays a crucial role in providing irrigation and water to the region; however, extreme heat in the Philippines and neighboring countries has led to various challenges, including suspended school classes.

Difficult words: unveil (to reveal), cultivation (preparing the land and growing crops on it), irrigation (supplying water to land or crops to help growth).
