A farmer takes RWE to court – level 3
02-06-2025 15:00
A court in Germany has ended a long-running legal case about climate change.
A farmer from Peru, Saul Luciano Lliuya, tried to sue the German company RWE. He said RWE had produced greenhouse gases, causing a glacier near his town to melt. He wanted the company to help protect his home. RWE replied that it had never worked in Peru and that climate change is a global issue, not a local one.
Finally, the court said there was not enough risk to the farmer’s house to continue the case. Because of that, they said the case couldn’t move forward, and the decision was final. It ended a case that had lasted for nearly ten years. Even though the court rejected this lawsuit, it also said big companies should be responsible for their emissions and the global warming they cause.
Experts believe this case will influence similar climate lawsuits in other countries, such as the USA, Indonesia, and Belgium. It could help future courts decide if companies should pay for climate damage.
Difficult words: final (the last, coming at the end), lawsuit (a legal court case).

Why did the court rule that Saul Luciano Lliuya’s lawsuit against RWE should not proceed?
