A man attacks a politician in Australia – level 3
26-10-2026 07:00
Independent Australian lawmaker Helen Haines remains in critical condition following a shocking vehicle attack outside her electorate office in Wangaratta, Victoria.
A 43-year-old suspect allegedly rammed his car into her while she was standing near the trunk of her vehicle, and then backed up to strike her again. A local barber disarmed and held the suspect until police arrived. Authorities have charged the suspect, while counterterrorism units and federal police assist with the investigation. The attack resulted in the amputation of one of the woman’s legs, and surgeons are working to save her other leg.
Haines is known for her political integrity and independent work representing regional interests, and she is widely respected across party lines. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese called the event a deliberate act and warned against growing hostility and rhetoric directed at elected officials. The incident has raised deep concerns about security and the changing safety of public access to politicians in Australia.
Difficult words: electorate office (an office maintained by an elected representative in their local district to serve and meet with local citizens), amputation (the surgical removal of a limb or part of the body), hostility (aggressive, unfriendly behavior or feelings towards someone), rhetoric (language used to influence people, often used in political debates).
