A new machine helps people die – level 3
27-01-2026 07:00
A Swiss inventor has presented a new version of the Sarco pod, a machine that helps people end their lives in places where the law allows assisted death.
The new model would allow two people to enter together and would use AI to decide if a person is mentally able to choose death. The creator says software could judge people more fairly than doctors.
The idea has caused a strong debate. Many experts say AI cannot safely decide such serious questions and can make mistakes. They warn that a machine shouldn’t replace human medical judgment in life and death decisions. Some also question whether the device causes a peaceful death, as claimed.
Assisted suicide remains legal in Switzerland under loose rules, but it stays illegal or tightly controlled in many countries. Past use of the Sarco pod led to police action and legal concern. As laws differ around the world, the new proposal raises fresh ethical and legal questions.
Difficult words: assisted death (when a person gets help to die, usually because they are very sick), differ (to not be the same), ethical (about what is right or wrong).
