Argentina fans have heart problems after matches – level 3
21-07-2026 07:00
A worrying study from Argentina has linked the intense emotional stress of World Cup football matches to a significant rise in serious heart-related emergencies among fans.
As the defending champions reached the 2026 final after several dramatic, late-minute comebacks, cardiologists reported a sharp spike in cardiovascular cases. In Tucumán province alone, doctors recorded 35 heart attacks during the tournament, which is significantly higher than the usual monthly average of 20. Medical experts explained that the extreme tension triggers high blood pressure, dangerous arrhythmias, severe chest pain, and even cardiac arrest.
While football itself doesn’t cause these medical events, the intense emotional rollercoaster can act as a dangerous trigger for individuals who already have some health issues. Doctors urge passionate supporters to enjoy the games responsibly and seek immediate medical help if they start to feel unwell.
Difficult words: defending champion (the player or team that won the last tournament or competition and is trying to win it again this year), trigger (to cause a sudden reaction or make something happen immediately), arrhythmia (a medical problem where the heart beats with an unusual rhythm).
