Asylum seekers use taxis to go to the doctors – level 1
03-12-2025 07:00
From February, the British government will stop asylum seekers from using taxis for most medical visits.
A BBC report says that some people use taxis for very long trips. One person takes a 250-mile taxi ride to see a doctor. It costs 600 pounds. The government looks into the problem. It says that it spends about 15.8 million pounds a year on transport for asylum seekers. This is more than 18 million euros. By banning taxis, officials hope to save a lot of this money. Asylum seekers should now use public transport for normal visits. The only people who can still use taxis are disabled or pregnant people.
Difficult words: asylum seeker (a person who leaves their country because it is not safe to stay), ban (to officially stop something from happening), disabled (a person who has some mental or physical limitations).
You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.
Which asylum seekers will still be allowed to use taxis for medical visits under the new rules?
