Australia elections – level 2

08-05-2025 07:00

Anthony Albanese won another term as Australia’s prime minister. His Labor Party won a big victory.

The other leader, Peter Dutton, lost not only the election but also his seat in parliament after 24 years. Experts say Dutton’s ideas were too much like Donald Trump’s, and he lost support over time. Albanese focused on helping with healthcare, energy, and the cost of living. These promises were popular. He also worked hard to get support from young voters, using podcasts and social media. Young people now vote more than older people in Australia. Labor now has a strong government, but they must keep their promises. Many voters also supported small or independent parties. That means the big parties need to understand why people are looking for new options.

Difficult words: victory (when you win), independent (not part of a big group or party), option (one of more possibilities).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

How did Albanese secure increased support from young voters during the campaign?
