Birds clean streets – level 2

09-02-2022 07:00

Many cities in the world have problems with cigarette butts in streets, and now, a company in Sweden came up with an interesting idea to solve these problems.

The company made a special box where wild birds put the cigarette butts. When they do it, they get a little food.

The birds are crows, and biologists say that crows are as smart as a 7-year-old child. Crows can think logically, and they learn more quickly than other birds. They also learn from each other. An official said that it was easier to teach crows to pick up cigarette butts than to teach people not to throw them on the ground.

A city near the capital city of Stockholm, Sweden, spends around 2.2 million dollars on cleaning the streets every year. The company says that crows could reduce the number by 75%.

Difficult words: biologist (a person who studies animals and plants), crow (a big black bird which makes a loud sound), reduce (to make something smaller).
