Bluefin tuna is back – level 1
06-10-2025 07:00
Bluefin tuna in Europe almost disappears 20 years ago. Many boats catch too many fish because people want sushi. There are no good rules. Many fishers break the rules.
Scientists ask for help. In 2007, new rules start. They make quotas and short fishing times. This helps tuna come back. Now there are many more tuna. In France, people must weigh and label every fish. Fishers like the rules. They can work and still keep fish safe.
Scientists also watch tuna. They use small planes to fly over the sea. Tuna is safe now, but people must follow the rules. Illegal fishing may still happen.
Difficult words: disappear (to no longer exist), quota (the number of something which you can do), label (to put information on something).
You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.
What two measures introduced in 2007 helped bluefin tuna populations to recover?
