Bluefin tuna is back – level 2

06-10-2025 07:00

Twenty years ago, bluefin tuna in Europe was in danger. Too many boats caught too many fish because sushi became very popular worldwide.

There were no real rules, and illegal fishing was everywhere. Scientists warned, and activists asked governments to act.

In 2007, a recovery plan started. It set quotas, reduced the number of fishing boats, and created inspections. This reduced catches and helped tuna grow again. Now, fishing is under strong control. In France, fishers weigh and label every tuna. They support the rules because they protect the future of the industry.

Scientists also use tagging and flights over the sea to check the number of tuna. Experts say the future is positive but warn against illegal fishing.

Difficult words: act (to do something), recovery (the process of getting better or becoming strong again after problems), quota (the amount of something you can do).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What measures were introduced in the 2007 recovery plan to reduce bluefin tuna catches and support their population growth?
