Bosses earn much more money – level 2

30-01-2026 15:00

CEO pay in the US has grown very fast since the 1990s, and the pay gap between CEOs and workers is much bigger than before.

Elon Musk may become the first trillionaire CEO because Tesla approved a very large pay deal. Other big company leaders also earn much more money, and high CEO pay is now normal in large companies. CEO pay doesn’t come from one paycheck. It includes salary, bonuses, and is mostly a part of the company. It means that a CEO’s pay is connected to the company’s success. Musk earns stock only if Tesla is successful. Many companies now use this system to push CEOs to think about a company’s future, not only about their money. Some people say high pay brings strong leaders and better results. Others say CEO pay rises even when results are not good. Studies show worker pay grows slowly, while CEO pay grows fast. This makes people speak about fair pay.

Difficult words: pay gap (the difference in how much money different people earn), paycheck (the money you get for your work, usually each month or week), result (what happens because of something).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What trend in worker and CEO compensation has led to discussions about fair pay?
