Brazilians have problems with money – level 1

05-10-2026 15:00

Brazil has big debt problems before its new election. Most families owe money. They use credit cards and loans with high costs.

Many people also lose money because they use mobile phones for online sports games. Small businesses and farmers cannot pay their banks either. The government also has big debts. It spends money on social programs and older people.

President Lula wants to help families without money. His political rival wants to cut government spending to save money. Experts say that high debt is very bad for the economy. The next president must make big changes to help the country grow.

Difficult words: debt (money which you borrow and must pay back), owe (to have to pay money to someone because they lend it to you), loan (money that a bank or person lends you, which you must return later), rival (a person who competes with somebody to win).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What contrasting approaches do President Lula and his political rival propose to address the country's financial problems?
