Brazilians have problems with money – level 3
05-10-2026 15:00
As Brazil gets closer to its next election, the massive debt problem is getting way too big to ignore.
Over 80% of households are deep in debt, mostly thanks to paying for everything in monthly installments, credit card rates shooting over 400%, and quick loans on banking apps.
On top of that, a huge surge in online sports betting has made financial stress even worse for regular families. Small businesses and farmers are also drowning in unpaid bills. Meanwhile, the government itself is struggling under heavy debt, with interest payments consuming over 8% of the national budget alongside mandatory spending on pensions and social programs.
President Lula wants to keep spending money to help poor families, while his main rival Flávio Bolsonaro is promising cuts without offering detailed plans. Analysts warn that if whoever wins doesn’t implement difficult financial reforms, the whole economy could easily end up in a real slowdown.
Difficult words: installment (one of several regular payments made over time to pay for something), mandatory (required by law or a rule), slowdown (a period when economic activity or growth becomes slower than before).
