Britain will ban social media for children under 16 – level 2

19-06-2026 07:00

The British Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, wants to ban social media for all children under 16. He wants to stop young people from using popular apps like TikTok, Instagram, and Snapchat.

The government also wants to put strict rules on online games and livestreaming platforms. Right now, strangers can easily contact children on these sites, which is very dangerous. Starmer thinks big technology companies have too much power and that children need to get their real childhood back. This new law will start next spring because many people worry about children’s mental health.

The government asked the public for their opinions, and more than 83% of parents said that social media is too dangerous for young kids. Many parents are happy about this big change, but some experts think the ban might not work well.

Difficult words: mental health (how you feel and how happy you are), public (all the people who live together in a town, city, or country), stranger (somebody who you don’t know at all).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

Why will the new law start next spring?
