British Man Freed in UAE – level 2

30-11-2018 15:00

In May in the United Arab Emirates, a court found that a British student was guilty of spying and sent him to jail for 25 years.

A British government official said that at the hearing, the student could not have his lawyer, it took five minutes, and the British media was banned. The decision shocked the student’s family and the UK government, and some officials questioned why they should work with the country.

Recently, the UAE’s king decided to release the student with other prisoners because of his family’s request for clemency and the historical relationship between the two countries.

Difficult words: hearing (a legal event where you can talk about if you are innocent or guilty of a crime), ban (to not allow somebody something), clemency (forgiving someone).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.
