Bulgaria stops helping Ukraine – level 3
15-06-2026 15:00
Bulgaria will stop providing weapons from its army stocks to Ukraine, according to the country’s prime minister, Rumen Radev.
He stated that Bulgaria has already given enough military aid and is currently suffering socio-economic damage from the conflict. He also believed that a peaceful solution cannot be achieved through military means and calls for a diplomatic end to the war.
While the country’s private defense industry will continue to manufacture and supply ammunition for Kyiv, the official government shipments from state military stores will completely end. This decision reflects the stance of the newly elected government, as Radev took office in May 2026 after his party won the parliamentary elections. The country’s Defence Minister supported this position and said more weapons only lead to more loss of human life. He also suggested that both sides must begin peace negotiations.
However, this policy shift has faced strong criticism from another party whose members argue that stopping military aid damages Bulgaria’s reputation and trust among its NATO and European Union allies.
Difficult words: socio-economic (relating to how money, business, and jobs affect people’s daily lives and society), ammunition (bullets, shells, and bombs that are fired from weapons), stance (an official opinion, position, or attitude that someone holds towards a specific topic), reputation (the opinion or belief that people generally have about how good, honest, or reliable someone or something is).
