Bulgaria’s rose industry – level 1

29-05-2024 07:00

Bulgaria makes a lot of rose oil. We use rose oil in many products and cosmetics.

Last week, farmers in Bulgaria pick rose petals. It happens earlier than usual because of climate change. The spring is warmer and wetter. Farmers need 1,000 petals to make one gram of rose oil. They pick petals by hand. They start early, at 7:00 am. The oil is best then.

It takes about three tons of rose flowers to make one kilogram of rose oil. This year, the weather is better. Farmers get more oil. The first oil factory in Bulgaria opens in 1820.

Difficult words: cosmetics (substances which we put on our face and body), petal (the colorful part of a flower), climate change (unusual weather).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What factors have led to the early picking of rose petals in Bulgaria and how does this impact the production of rose oil?
