Bull Sport in India – level 3

In southern India, a controversial bull-taming sport called Jallikattu is making a comeback. Thousands of people came to watch the tradition that is centuries old.

India’s top court banned this tradition because of animal cruelty. One man said that people poke the bulls with sharp objects, force them to drink liquor, and jab or twist their tails.

In 2017, the sport came back to the Tamil Nadu state after protests forced laws to change. PETA is campaigning for the ban of the sport to return. A man for the sport said that he wants PETA to be banned in Tamil Nadu because unlike Spain and other countries, he says that the people think of the bulls as their own children.

Difficult words: tame (do things to an animal so that you can control it), jab (hit sharply and quickly), PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals – an organisation that protects animals).
