Canarians protest against tourism – level 1

25-04-2024 07:00

Many people in the Canary Islands protest. They say that there are too many tourists.

Officials must say how many tourists can come. Too many people hurt the natural world. It has also a bad impact on local people. Tourism is hurting their land and lives. 13.9 million tourists come to the islands last year. It is six times more than local people. Most tourists come from the UK and Germany. People are upset. Officials care more about building hotels than helping local people.

Similar protests happen in mainland Spain. Tourism must not hurt nature and poor people.

Difficult words: local (people who live in a place), upset (angry and unhappy), mainland (a large piece of land, not an island).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What are some of the negative impacts of tourism on the Canary Islands, and what measures should be taken to mitigate these effects?
