Canarians protest against tourism – level 2

25-04-2024 07:00

In the Canary Islands, many people protested against mass tourism.

They believe that it is causing problems. They want to limit the number of tourists and control harmful development. Local people support tourism, but they feel that it is damaging their land and lives. Protesters are upset that politicians prioritize building hotels over local needs. Last year, the islands received 13.9 million tourists, which was six times more than the local population. Most tourists come from the UK and Germany.

Similar protests took place in mainland Spain. People say that it is necessary to think about the natural world and the social problems which tourism brings.

Difficult words: limit (to state the highest possible number, amount, and so on), prioritize (to make something more important than other things), social (relating to people as a group).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What issues have arisen due to mass tourism in the Canary Islands and mainland Spain, and how are local communities responding to them?
