Children and social media – level 2

04-04-2024 07:00

Kara Swisher is a journalist, a podcast host, and a mother of four children. She is also an expert in the tech world. Her book ‘Burn Book: A Tech Love Story’ is a bestseller.

She discussed a new law which stops kids under 14 from having social media accounts. This is only possible with parents’ permission. Swisher compares social media to cigarettes. She believes that social media is addictive and has negative effects on mental health, especially among young girls. Swisher agrees with government regulation of social media companies. Many people in the US want to ban TikTok in the country. Swisher believes that there need to be stricter rules for foreign tech platforms in the US.

She also spoke about both the positive and negative impacts of AI on children and people in general.

Difficult words: permission (allowing someone to do something), addictive (a drug you cannot stop taking or an activity you cannot stop doing), in general (as a whole).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What are Kara Swisher's views on government regulation of social media and foreign tech platforms in the US?
