China fog – level 2

02-01-2024 15:00

Shanghai faced a thick fog during the year-end holiday, which caused worry about transport problems.

Authorities issued a red fog warning which covered areas from the north in Hab province to Shanghai in the south. It was the first warning since 2017. Famous landmarks like the Shanghai Center Tower and Oriental Pearl Tower became almost invisible, which surprised residents. Ferries, highways, and bridges temporarily closed due to the fog. Over 600 flights faced delays in many cities.

Experts expect that the bad weather will improve with a coming cold wave. China endured extreme weather throughout the year, from periods of very cold weather to heatwaves and big storms.

Difficult words: landmark (a building or structure which you can easily see), invisible (something what you can’t see), temporarily (for some time).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What measures were taken by authorities to address the thick fog in Shanghai during the year-end holiday?
