Countries want Greenland’s minerals – level 2

22-10-2025 07:00

Greenland has a lot of special metals called rare earths. People use them to make phones, computers, and rockets.

Most of these metals now come from China, but the US and Europe want to find their own supply. A company called Critical Metals wants to start a mine in the south of Greenland. Mining there is hard because it is far, cold, and has little transport. Some local people hope it will bring new jobs and money. Others worry about the environment.

The world is watching because Greenland may become an important place for these valuable materials.

Difficult words: supply (an amount of something what people can use), mine (a place where people dig in the ground to get metals, coal, or other minerals), valuable (worth a lot of money or very important).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What hopes and concerns do local people have about the proposed mine in southern Greenland?
