Countries want Greenland’s minerals – level 3

22-10-2025 07:00

Greenland, the world’s largest island, holds huge deposits of valuable minerals known as rare earths, which are essential for technologies like smartphones, electric cars, and rockets.

Although mining remains limited, companies such as Critical Metals plan to extract these resources from the southern region. China currently controls most of the global supply, but the US and Europe are eager to secure their own sources. Greenland’s strategic Arctic location and its mineral wealth have sparked major international interest, including from the US government. However, mining in Greenland is expensive and difficult because of its icy, remote landscape and lack of infrastructure. Local communities hope new projects will bring jobs and development, though many remain concerned about environmental impact. With three of the world’s largest rare earth deposits, Greenland could soon become a key player in global mineral production.

Difficult words: deposit (a natural collection of minerals in the ground), essential (very important or necessary), remote (far away from cities or towns; difficult to reach).
