Croatia costs too much for tourists – level 3

30-06-2025 15:00

Croatia used to be known as a low-cost holiday spot on the Adriatic, but in recent years, it has become more expensive.

Gracia Horvatin, who has worked in tourism for decades, runs a restaurant that grew from a small family tavern. Like the tourism industry in Croatia, her business has developed and adapted to changes. Today, high inflation, labor shortages, and state costs have caused prices to increase. However, many businesses, like Gracia’s, choose not to raise prices again.

Tourist behavior is also changing. Visitors, especially from Germany and Austria, now prefer shorter stays and want to explore more places. Long-time guests notice that prices are higher, especially since the Euro was introduced, but they also admit that the quality of services has improved.

The Croatian tourist board argues that the country still offers good value. However, there is concern that rising prices may keep locals away from their coast in the future.

Difficult words: tavern (a small restaurant or bar), labor shortage (not enough workers for the jobs).

Why do many Croatian tourism businesses, including Gracia Horvatin’s restaurant, refrain from further price hikes despite high inflation, labor shortages, and rising state costs?
